How Can”Just Walk Out Tech” Change How We Shop?

It is no secret that shopping has changed radically during the last ten years.

We’re seeing a growing number of brick and mortar shops closing because people would rather shop online. Even grocery stores are starting to take a hit since we can only order meal kits that appear on our door step weekly or have our favourite restaurant deliver our food at the click of a button on our telephones. So, what’s next? How can shopping become easier for us? After all, convenience is a significant priority nowadays.

It is called the Amazon Effect. Since launch in 1994, Amazon has completely changed how we store and look at advantage. If our online order does not arrive with free delivery and arrive at our doorstep in two days, we think that is absurd! “Pay $4.99 for shipping and it arrives in 3-5 business days? No way! I bet Amazon has it.” You know you’ve done this several times and think of all of the company lost from other retailers for this.

Amazon has thrown a new curve ball in the retail industry. Introducing Amazon Go, a freestanding grocery store in which you download an app, scan your telephone when you walk in the door and whatever you purchase is automatically added to your Amazon cart and your stored credit card is billed when you walk out the door. Also called”simply walk out technology.” No voucher lines, no interaction with shop workers, and no point of sale.

There are only 9 of those stores in major cities today, but you can expect these to begin popping up around you more and more in the upcoming few years. So clearly grocery retailers are beginning to worry how this will impact their earnings, especially after seeing how Amazon has changed how consumers shop for other goods. Look at Toys R Us, for instance. The toy shop giant closed after over 60 years in business since they were losing sales to online stores such as Amazon.

Walmart is already attempting to compete with this by launching Sam’s Club Today , powered by their new shopping app and its simply a matter of time before other retailers start to follow suit.

So, how does this change how we store in the near future and the standard point of sale? To be able to remain relevant, it’s more important than ever to focus on what customers are craving. They want convenience, hardly any interaction, speed of service and everything available right at their fingertips, i.e. their mobile phone. Because of this, app development will continue to grow and eventually become a priority for retailers and software integration partners that could help tie this all together is becoming a necessity.

Bear in mindthe modern-day consumer is searching for an experience.
